The motion

That the Parliament commends the conservation efforts of all those involved in the Saving Wildcats project, based at the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie; understands that the conservation effort is a partnership project between the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, NatureScot, the Cairngorms National Park Authority, Forestry and Land Scotland, as well as European partners Norden’s Ark from Sweden and Spain’s Junta De Andalucía, which has led the successful recovery of the Iberian lynx; acknowledges that the project aims to prevent the extinction of what it sees as the critically endangered species, by breeding and releasing wildcats into the wild; notes that a report published in 2019 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Cat Specialist Group concluded that there is no longer a viable wildcat population living wild in Scotland; understands that conservation experts are hopeful that the first wildcats can be released in 2023, with potential locations being explored in the Cairngorms, and wishes all those involved in the project every success in the future.
