The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Montrose Playhouse will open its doors to residents and visitors to Angus and South Aberdeenshire on 8 October 2021; understands that the new venue, which has taken nine years to come to fruition, is housed in the former swimming pool building situated on The Mall in Montrose; considers that this is an excellent example of community regeneration that will help to facilitate social and cultural events for a wide range of audiences while also boosting the local economy; notes that the venue includes three cinema screens, two activity rooms, a café bar and retail space, which, it believes, will provide a flexible environment for a range of activities, including events, workshops and classes; further understands that the Playhouse will be a not-for-profit facility run by managers employed by the Montrose Playhouse Project SCIO Trustees, who will retain overall governance; commends the Playhouse on its ethos of being a facility “which is truly for the community, by the community”; congratulates the Montrose Playhouse's founder, its team and its volunteers on driving the project through to completion despite the difficult circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, and wishes the venue and staff well for the official launch.
