50th Anniversary of the Clarkston Disaster
The motion
That the Parliament pays tribute to the 22 people who tragically lost their lives at the Clarkston Disaster, 50 years ago on 21 October 1971; notes that, in addition to those who sadly passed away as a result of this disaster, more than 100 individuals were injured because of the gas explosion that took place, half a century ago; remembers that the explosion flattened a row of shops at Clarkston Toll, and the terraced rooftop car park as the structures collapsed into rubble on the main street, with a passing bus also caught up in the destruction; acknowledges that this tragic event has been described as Scotland's worst peace-time explosion, and that it is understood to have carried the same force as a 300lb bomb; recognises that a minute's silence will be held across East Renfrewshire at 2.50pm, the same time as the explosion, on 21 October 2021 to mark the 50th anniversary, and to remember those whose lives were lost; notes that East Renfrewshire Council will also be holding a special service on the same day at the memorial tree in the Clarkston Halls car park for the families of victims and survivors; pays tribute to the 22 individuals who lost their lives at this tragic event, and reflects on the devastation that was caused by the explosion.
