The motion

That the Parliament commends Clan Cancer Support and Wild in Art on the Light The North - The Lighthouse Trail, which ran from 9 August to 17 October 2021 across the north east, Orkney and Shetland; understands that the cultural trail, which consisted of 50 lighthouse sculptures designed by some of the UK’s most talented artists, was conceived to help visitors and local communities rediscover and engage with the region during Visit Scotland’s Year of Scotland’s Coasts and Waters; highlights what it considers to be the high level of engagement with the project, with more than 5,000 people downloading the Light The North app to catalogue the lighthouses they visited, track their progress, and vote for their favourite sculptures; congratulates the artist, Kym Parker, who designed the top-ranked sculpture, 7th Wonder, which she based on the Bell Rock Lighthouse, which is described as one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World; notes that the lighthouse sculptures will be auctioned to help raise funds for Clan Cancer Support, which provides emotional and practical support to people affected by cancer and who live in the region; encourages locals and visitors alike to attend the Light The North Farewell Weekend, at Gordon Barracks, between 29 and 31 October, which will be the final opportunity to see all 50 large lighthouses and 90 little lighthouses that were painted by school pupils, community groups and artists, before they are auctioned on 1 November, and acknowledges all those involved in the project’s implementation, as well as its sponsors and supporters, for a hugely successful 10-week event in aid of an excellent cause.
