Scottish Squash Open 2021
The motion
That the Parliament notes the success of the Springfield Scottish Squash Open, which was held from 22 to 26 September 2021 at the Inverness Tennis & Squash Club; understands that the ladies' championship was won by Georgina Kennedy in a match against Grace Gear, and that the men’s championship was won by Sebastien Bonmalais in a match against Emyr Evans; applauds the efforts of the nine Scottish athletes who participated in the event, which will help them improve in the world rankings and provide valuable preparation ahead of the selection for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and in particular Georgia Adderley, who reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by the eventual ladies champion Georgina Kennedy; congratulates all 46 athletes who competed; understands that, as part of Scottish Squash’s commitment to equality, inclusion and diversity, the prize pots were the same for both the men’s and ladies' competitions; acknowledges what it sees as the important contribution of the sponsors and partners for the event, Springfield Properties, LNER, AVISU, Creative Sign & Print, EventScotland, Graham’s Family Dairy, High Life Highland, Highlands & Islands Squash Association, Inverness Common Good Fund, Inverness Tennis & Squash Club and sportscotland; welcomes the ambition of Scottish Squash and its principal sponsor, Springfield Properties, to take the championship around Scotland, including the possibility of playing in a glass court at an iconic Scottish location, such as Edinburgh Castle or George Square; recognises the potential of major sporting championships to encourage greater grassroots participation in sports such as squash, creating new opportunities and benefitting individual physical and mental health; commends all those involved in the delivery of the Springfield Scottish Squash Open, and wishes the event every success in future years.
