The motion

That the Parliament commends Liam Macaulay, a stonemason from Clackmannanshire, who, it understands, is hoping to encourage others to take up a trade, and take on board an opportunity to work for themselves; understands that Liam has been devoted to stonemasonry for seven years and has recently spoken to the local press about his profession, in the hope of encouraging young people into vocational jobs; further understands that Liam considers himself to have fallen into the trade, deciding to go with a Forth Valley College apprenticeship during an open day; believes that it can be a rewarding experience to see a finished product that is the result of one’s own work; commends what it sees as Liam’s engagement to try to encourage everyone in any age bracket to get involved in this and similar professions, as a means to developing a valuable skill that they can use for the rest of their lives; notes reported concerns of a shortage of people with the skills needed to conserve the built environment, and commends Liam on his dedication, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit.
