Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden
The motion
That the Parliament notes the sad passing of Lord Norman Somerville Macfarlane of Bearsden, one of Scotland’s leading 20th century industrialists; further notes that "Lord Mac", as he was affectionately known, was born in Glasgow, was chairman of Guinness, and honorary life president of spirits company, Diageo; acknowledges that Lord Macfarlane was a leading patron of the Scottish arts having chaired an appeal to fund a major refurbishment of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and was granted the Freedom of Glasgow due to the millions raised during this appeal; further acknowledges that he was a member of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland, a member of the Glasgow Art Club, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Lord High Commissioner to the Church of Scotland, Honorary Patron of Queen’s Park Football Club, Royal Artillery Officer in the British Army, a life peer in the House of Lords, and a Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, and wishes to record heartfelt condolences to his wife, Lady Macfarlane, and all of the family during this very difficult period.
