The Sacrifices of Erskine Veteran, Jim Marshall, and his Bomber Command Comrades
The motion
That the Parliament pays tribute to the members of Bomber Command who flew operations for the RAF during the Second World War, including Jim Marshall, who lives in the Erskine Veterans’ Village in Bishopton; understands that Jim, who is 98, was just 18 when he joined the RAF in 1941 and trained as a navigator, flying in Wellingtons with 38 Squadron for more than 100 operations without incident until crash landing during a search-and-rescue mission in Italy a month after the war ended; notes that he was the only member of his crew to survive; acknowledges that Bomber Command aircrews experienced a high casualty rate, with 55,573 from its estimated 125,000 personnel killed in action; understands that, due to being badly burned in the crash, Jim became a member of the so-called Guinea Pig Club, under the care of the pioneering plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe; further understands that he is the only surviving Scottish member, and believes the sacrifices of all who served as members of Bomber Command should be respectfully remembered.
