Declining Population of European Sparrows and its Sister Species

Lodged by Meghan Gallacher (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party) Standard Motion 29 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern the reports of the decline in the population of the European Sparrow, also commonly known as the House Sparrow, with its numbers estimated to have fallen by 247 million across Europe since 1980, and is reported to have lost half its population; acknowledges the reported decline in its sister species, the Tree Sparrow, numbers of which are thought to have fallen by 30 million; understands that the increasing decline in the number of these bird species is in part due to changing farming practices and, in cities, the species are understood to have almost completely vanished due to food shortages and increasing air pollution, and welcomes the studies being undertaken by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in an attempt to tackle this problem and try to halt any further decline in the number of these and other bird species.
