RSPB Birds of Conservation Concern 5 Report

The motion

That the Parliament notes with alarm that the recent RSPB report, Birds of Conservation Concern 5, places more birds than ever before on the Red list of species of greatest conservation concern; further notes that at 70 species long, the Red list is nearly double the length of the one in the first report that was published in 1996, showing that even more of the UK's birds are considered to be in trouble; recognises that the swift, house martin and greenfinch have all moved onto the Red list because of reported population declines, joining other well-known birds, such as puffins and cuckoos; understands that more birds that migrate to Africa for the winter seem to be faring less well and have been Red-listed, while there has been no improvement in the status of farmland or upland birds, and recognises that waterbirds, which spend the winter in the UK, are reported to have declined in numbers, resulting in the goldeneye, smew, Bewick’s swan and dunlin all moving to the Red list.
