The motion

That the Parliament remembers the victims of the Ukrainian Holodomor genocide; notes that Holodomor Memorial Day, a day of commemoration and remembrance, takes place annually on the fourth Saturday of November; understands that Holodomor, which can be translated as extermination by hunger, took place in the Soviet Republic of Ukraine between 1932 and 1933 when Joseph Stalin’s regime weaponised food to systematically starve the Ukrainian population in a mass famine; notes reports that, between the winter of 1932 and the spring of 1933, it is estimated that almost 25,000 people died of starvation each day; believes that, during this brutal and horrific campaign, millions died from starvation and countless others were deported, imprisoned, or executed; considers that the atrocities of Holodomor were hidden from the world or denied for decades and that this emphasises the importance of reflection and commemoration of this dark period in human history; offers solidarity to the Ukrainian community in Scotland at this solemn and sombre time, and wishes everyone a brighter, more peaceful future.
