The motion

That the Parliament marks Safer Internet Day 2022; understands that Safer Internet Day is an annual initiative, run by the Internet Watch Foundation, Childnet International and SWGfL, and coordinated in the UK by UK Safer Internet Centre, to facilitate a national conversation about internet safety and child protection online, as well as promoting responsible, respectful and creative use of technology; notes that the theme for Safer Internet Day 2022 is "All fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online"; understands that speaking with young people is key to exploring their experiences on platforms where they can play games, interact with their peers and others, and take part in "live" experiences such as video streaming; believes that online platforms play an increasingly important role in providing young people with the means to interact with friends, but that emerging safety issues require to be addressed, such as a lack of respect online, a perceived lack of consequence for negative behaviour, and hate directed at particular vulnerable and marginalised groups on gaming and online platforms; notes the research from UK Safer Internet Centre, which found that nearly 60% of young people want to learn more about how to play online games safely, and that 71% of young people who play games online say it makes them happy, but 46% have received requests to meet up with strangers in person; believes that every child and person should be able to use the internet free from harm and abuse; commends the work of all organisations involved in Safer Internet Day 2022, and wishes them every success in raising awareness of what it considers this increasingly important issue.
