Team GB Women's Team Strikes Gold at Winter Olympics

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Team GB Women’s Curling Team on their historic victory at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, in winning the gold medal; recognises the remarkable achievement of skip, Eve Muirhead, and her team, Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds, Hailey Duff and Mili Smith, who, it considers, overcame all the odds to triumph in the final against Japan; acknowledges the huge pride that they have brought to the nation; notes what it believes to be the enormous commitment and dedication shown by the team members, most notably the long hours spent travelling to training sessions in the months before the Olympics; believes that their success will now inspire many young women to take up the sport, which will be to the good of future curling; applauds the role of the small community of curling clubs and facilities, such as Stranraer and Perth Curling rinks, and many others across Scotland, which, it understands, provide the opportunity for players of all ages to play the sport together and for people with a wide range of disabilities to take up the sport; recognises The Royal Caledonian Curling Club and British Curling, which, it considers, not only nurture the sport at grassroots level, but create a world-class training environment for curling talent to thrive and succeed by inspiring a growing generation of athletes to compete and win at the top level, and wishes the Team GB Women’s Curling Team continued success in the future as they look to build on this incredible achievement.
