The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Glasgow on being awarded £10 million from the UK Government funded Natural Environment Research Council (NERC); understands that the fund supports research, training and knowledge transfer activities in the environmental sciences, to help the city of Glasgow move towards climate resilience whilst tackling health, social and economic inequalities; further understands that the University of Glasgow will work in partnership with Glasgow City Council, community groups and other partners to reach net zero by 2030 by focussing on a range of activities, including the capture of greenhouse gases in formerly derelict land, biodiversity improvement, valuing riverbanks as community places, promoting active travel and creating energy solutions; understands that, as lead partner in the Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation programme (GALLANT), the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Sustainable Solutions will build on existing inter-disciplinary academic collaborations and develop new ones, as well as new ways of working to suit what it sees as these urgent challenges; further understands that over 50 researchers are engaged in a whole-systems approach that considers the co-benefits and trade-offs for public health, wellbeing, and the economy, and notes that the team uses Glasgow as a living lab to trial innovative, sustainable solutions, as the city seeks, it believes, to build on the legacy of COP26 through partnership between academia, the city council and communities, business and what it understands is the UK’s largest funder of environment science.
