Remembering the Clydebank Blitz

Lodged by Marie McNair (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 29 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the 81st anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz; understands that on the nights of 13 and 14 March 1941, 439 Luftwaffe bombers dropped more than 1,000 bombs in their raid over the Clydeside; recoils in the knowledge that 528 Bankies were killed and 617 were injured; understands that the main targets in Clydebank were the armaments factory in the Singer Sewing Machine works, John Brown and Company’s shipyard, and Beardmore’s engine works; commends what it sees as the everlasting Clydebank Spirit, which, it understands, became synonymous with the Blitz Spirit across the entire nation; celebrates what it sees as the resilience of Clydebank in the face of 12,000 houses being damaged with 4,300 completely destroyed, leaving 11,350 residents and factory workers homeless; celebrates the heroes who, it understands, pulled survivors out of the rubble and helped with rebuilding efforts, and pays respect to all casualties of what it considers as this disastrous event and promises to never forget.
