The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Josie Steed, Design Researcher and Senior Lecturer at Robert Gordon University (RGU), on becoming the first female member to be admitted to the Aberdeen Tailors Incorporation in the Trade’s history spanning more than 500 years; understands that Josie started her career at the Royal Opera House in London, where she worked for a number of years in theatre wardrobe departments; notes that her research at RGU Gray’s School of Art focuses on raising the international profile of Scottish manufacturing and creative businesses through knowledge exchange; understands that Josie collaborated with the Aberdeen Tailors Incorporation on an award for second and third year students doing the Fashion and Textile Design BA (Hons) course at Gray’s, before being approached about membership; recognises that the process for becoming a member is, it believes, rigorous, and included the design and fabrication of a skirt to demonstrate Josie’s high level of technical skill in areas such as measuring and hand-stitching; commends Josie on her ambition to promote the craft of fashion tailoring and its value to the north east; considers that she is an inspiration to her students and women in the industry who hope to follow in her footsteps and become female members themselves, and wishes Josie and the Aberdeen Tailors Incorporation well as they continue to promote the trade and support future generations as they develop their craft.
