Nicola Benedetti CBE Appointed Edinburgh International Festival's First Female Director

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti CBE, who is from West Kilbride, North Ayrshire, on her appointment as the new Director of the Edinburgh International Festival from October 2022; welcomes that Grammy Award Winner, Brit Award Winner and BBC Music Magazine’s 2021 Personality of the Year, Ms Benedetti, will be the first female director of the festival since it began in 1947; believes that the Edinburgh International Festival is universally recognised as one of the leading and most prestigious classical music and performing arts festivals in the world, and has built up a reputation for excellence over its 75-year existence; considers that Ms Benedetti sets an encouraging example for children and young people across the country to play string instruments through her work with the National Children’s Orchestras, National Youth Orchestras of Scotland’s Junior Orchestra, Sistema Scotland and other charities; applauds that, in 2019, the violinist launched The Benedetti Foundation, a charity that, since January 2020, has worked with over 29,000 participants, aged two to 92, from 103 countries, through its in-person workshops and online sessions for young people, students, teachers and adults; believes that Ms Benedetti is an inspiring ambassador for both Scotland and classical music the world over; wishes Ms Benedetti continued success in her directorship of the Edinburgh International Festival and all her other activities; notes that Ms Benedetti will succeed Fergus Linehan; thanks Mr Linehan for his delivery of the festival since his appointment in 2015, and wishes him every success in his future endeavours.
