Melrose Included in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2022

The motion

That the Parliament understands that Melrose has been voted one of the best places to live in the country in a recent survey commissioned by the Sunday Times; understands that the expert judges behind the guide assess a wide range of factors, from schools, transport and broadband to culture, green spaces and the health of the high street; further understands that the judges commented on Melrose's links to rugby, as home to the oldest rugby sevens tournament in the world, returning in 2022 after a two year break, and the town’s literary reputation, which, it understands, comes to the fore every summer in the Borders Book Festival; notes that the picturesque town of Melrose is located next to the River Tweed at the foot of the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills, which is a distinctive landmark of the Scottish Borders; understands that the area around Melrose is thought to have been inhabited for thousands of years with the Romans arriving in AD79 or 80 and building a fort nearby named Trimontium, Place of the Three Hills; further understands that The Three Hills Roman Heritage Centre houses the Trimontium Museum, which is dedicated to Roman life in Scotland, and congratulates the town’s community for maintaining what it believes to be a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere in the town.
