International Guide Dog Day, 27 April 2022

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 27 April 2022 is International Guide Dog Day; understands that every six minutes in the UK, one more person loses their sight, and that the number of people living with sight loss is set to double by 2050; recognises the life-changing impact of guide dog partnerships and commends the work of Guide Dogs Scotland, since its first Training School opened in Forfar in 1965 to the present day, when 419 guide dogs are helping their owners to be independent and mobile; understands that its services also include buddy dogs to help children with sight loss build confidence and trust in their surroundings; celebrates the generous public support on which the organisation’s work relies, and the contribution of 1,500 volunteers across the country, including 370 households who, it understands, are raising puppies or fostering dogs training to become fully qualified guide dogs, and wishes it every success in its goal of doubling the number of people supported by its services.
