Scotland Hosts WSF World Squash Doubles Championships

That the Parliament notes the success of the WSF World Squash Doubles Championships, held at Scotstoun Sports Campus in Glasgow from 5 to 9 April 2022, which, attracted teams from 15 nations including Canada, India, Malta, Singapore, and Spain as well as Scotland, England and Wales; understands that Scotland stepped in to host the Championships after the original plans for the event to take place in Australia in 2021 were disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which required Scottish Squash to organise the event for the first time in Scotland with only four months preparation; acknowledges what it sees as the significant investment made by Glasgow Life to regenerate the squash facilities at the Scotstoun Sports Campus, which, it understands, were originally developed to a world standard squash facility for the 2014 Commonwealth Games; recognises the valuable support and contribution of volunteers and partner organisations including Event Scotland, Glasgow Life, Team Scotland (Commonwealth Games Scotland) and World Squash in delivering the event, in addition to the continued support offered by sportscotland to Scottish Squash; congratulates the various winners, including the Indian team of Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Palliakal Karthik who, it understands, won the Mixed Doubles ahead of the English team of Adrian Waller and Alison Waters in second and Scottish team of Greg Lobban and Lisa Aitken in third, Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Palliakal Karthik of India who won the Women’s Doubles ahead of Sarah-Jane Perry and Alison Waters of England in second and Rachel Arnold and Sivasangari Subramaniam of Malaysia in third and Declan James and James Willstrop of England, who won the Men’s Doubles ahead of Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart of Scotland in second and Alan Clyne and Douglas Kempsell also of Scotland in third; commends Scottish Squash for its successful organising of this event and its ongoing efforts to develop squash within Scotland as well as promoting the country as a suitable venue for major international competition, and hopes to see squash’s popularity in Scotland continue to grow.
