Coeliac Awareness Week 9 to 15 May 2022
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week, which runs from 9 to 15 May 2022; understands that coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition affecting 1 in 100 people; further understands with concern that, in Scotland, 60% of people with coeliac disease, which is approximately 32,000 people, remain undiagnosed, leaving them potentially at risk of long-term complications, including osteoporosis, neurological dysfunction, fertility problems and, in rare cases, small bowel cancer; understands that the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is 13 years; encourages those experiencing common symptoms such as tiredness, sickness, diarrhoea, constipation and nutritional deficiencies to visit the Is It Coeliac Disease website; calls on GPs to implement a low threshold for testing for coeliac disease, and encourages the Scottish Government to commit to full implementation of the coeliac clinical pathway across the country.
