Schools Countryside Day

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Border Union Agricultural Society on its upcoming Schools Countryside Day at Springwood Park, Kelso; understands that 1,200 Primary 5 pupils from across the region will participate in the eighth Schools Countryside Day on 17 May 2022; recognises that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sadly the event was cancelled in the previous two years; notes that during the event children will learn about farming, food production and rural life; considers that the Field-to-Fork initiative has given countless children a real insight into what it takes to get their food on the table; notes that during the 2022 Schools Countryside Day, children will have the chance to enjoy over 50 activities and demonstrations ranging from spinning, weaving, milking, beekeeping and auctioneering to sheep-shearing and stick-making; commends all those involved in the organisation of the event, and wishes them success, and calls on the Scottish Government to establish a Countryside Day in every local authority for Primary 4 and 5 pupils, as well as reforming the Curriculum for Excellence to include agriculture and food production as a national qualification at all SCQF levels.
