International Museum Day 2022

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 18 May was International Museum Day 2022; recognises that, since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has organised International Museum Day on or around 18 May every year; understands that the objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that "museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples"; further understands that, in 2022, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories; notes that the 2022 themes include the power of achieving sustainability, the power of innovating on digitalisation and accessibility and the power of community building through education; salutes the efforts of Scottish museums and galleries during COVID-19; praises their ingenuity in adapting to the pandemic, including digital work and novel approaches to exhibiting their collections; notes what it sees as the value that museums and galleries bring to Scotland, both in economic and cultural terms, and voices its support for Scotland's rich trove of museums and galleries.
