The motion

That the Parliament applauds Stanley for receiving what it sees as a prestigious city status as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations; notes that the competition to receive civic honours was last run 10 years ago to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and that in 2022, for the first time ever, the competition was open to applications from the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories; understands that Stanley highlighted its royal links, cultural heritage and why a distinct local identity meant that it deserved to be awarded a city status; further understands that the Falklands application included details of special events such as the Queen’s Birthday parade and annual Boxing Day parades; believes that city status often leads to economic growth and increased tourism; celebrates Stanley in the Falkland Islands for being the first Overseas Territory to win city status; commends all eight successful cities that received city status, which include Dunfermline, Stanley, Bangor, Colchester, Doncaster, Douglas, Milton Keynes and Wrexham; applauds the Queen for what it sees as her generosity, and commends everyone involved in this process.
