"Better Safe than Tumour" Campaign Launched by The Brain Tumour Charity
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that a new flagship campaign to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours in children and adults has been launched; understands that the campaign by the Brain Tumour Charity, named Better Safe than Tumour, aims to support the public in their awareness of the possible signs and symptoms, and encourage them to get any concerning or persistent symptoms checked out by a doctor; believes that Better Safe than Tumour builds on the success of the charity’s previous long-term initiative in paediatric brain tumours known as HeadSmart, which launched in 2009, in partnership with the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health and the University of Nottingham, to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms in children and teenagers; understands that, following HeadSmart’s reported impact in helping reduce average diagnosis times in younger people from 13 to 6.5 weeks, the award-winning campaign has now been refreshed and expanded to cover the signs and symptoms in both children and adults; further understands that with this new campaign being launched, the Brain Tumour Charity has also launched a website at headsmart.org.uk/symptom-checker where people can use a new symptom tracker, which, it understands, then produces a helpful guide which they can download; understands that this means that, if they then visit their GP, they are guided on what to expect, what they can do to prepare and what they should say; further understands that with over 12,000 people being diagnosed in the UK each year, brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, and commends the Brain Tumour Charity on its tireless work in this regard, as well as for what it sees as this excellent campaign.
