The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the Samaritans Awareness Day named The Big Listen, which takes place on 24 July 2022; notes the significance of the date, highlighting Samaritans’ 24/7 availability; understands that the event aims to highlight that, every six seconds, the charity answers a call for help and that it is there to provide help 24/7 for anyone who is struggling to cope and needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure; considers that Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis, but is about preventing difficulties arising and escalating in the first instance, thus helping to give people a means to cope and the skills to be there for others, as well as encouraging, promoting and celebrating those moments of connection between people, which, it believes, can save lives; understands that it offers support not only to people and communities in times of need, but also those in hospitals, schools, prisons and across the rail network; believes that now, more than ever, Samaritans needs people’s help in the form of donations; understands that to mark 24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day, many branches across Scotland and the UK are holding their own fundraising events, whether it be a coffee morning or a bake sale, that the hashtag, “#Talk To Us” is one of the ways they can raise awareness and that they are there for anyone who needs someone to listen; encourages everyone to become involved, and commends the charity for what it sees as its tireless work in reaching out to more people and working to make suicide prevention a priority.
