Ukraine Commemorates Independence Day

The motion

That the Parliament retains its solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who, on 24 August, normally celebrate the day the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed by its parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, in 1991; is aware that Ukrainian independence was ratified by 92.3% of voters in a referendum with an 84.2% turnout; recognises that, following Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression and territorial aggrandisement, 2022’s celebrations will be muted; understands the determination of Ukrainians to retain their independence and recover the territory seized by Russia; urges the Russian leadership to accept that continuation of their bloody invasion and occupation of sovereign Ukrainian territory will cost many thousands of lives on both sides, with increased impoverishment and embitterment, and believes that Russia must withdraw from the territory it has seized.
