Scottish Commonwealth Success

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the success of Scottish athletes at the 2022 Commonwealth Games; commends the accomplishments of every Scottish participant at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which, it understands, is the highest medal-scoring games for Scotland since the 2014 Glasgow Games with 51 medals; notes that Scottish Athletics has the largest medal total in over 40 years, including Eilish McColgan’s record-breaking 10,000m gold, Laura Muir’s back-to-back gold in the 1500m and bronze in the 800m, Jake Wightman’s 1500m bronze victory, and the women’s 4x400m team’s bronze medal; further notes that medals in swimming from Toni Shaw, the 4x200m men’s relay team, Stephen Clegg, Ross Murdoch, Duncan Scott, Katie Shanahan, and James Heatly and Grace Reid’s gold medal in diving, gives Scotland the highest tally in aquatics from any Commonwealth Games; understands that Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart’s bronze in men’s squash doubles is the first squash medal since 1998 and Louise Christie’s silver in rhythmic gymnastics was the highest scoring performance for Scotland in history and the country's first medal in the sport in over 30 years; further understands that this was Scotland’s most successful games for cycling, where 11 medals were secured, and para-bowls, where the country medalled in five of the six para-sports; congratulates all the Scottish athletes who participated in the Commonwealth Games; recognises the force for good that it believes sport can be in inspiring younger generations into sport, including in South Scotland, and enabling teaching through sport, and wishes them every success in the future.
