Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month
The motion
That the Parliament notes that September marks Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, and during this month, in addition to all their sterling work throughout the year, charities such as Target Ovarian Cancer work hard to raise awareness of this disease and how to spot potential symptoms; considers that early diagnosis is vital, and that there are three key facts about ovarian cancer which always should be remembered: first, that cervical smear tests will not detect ovarian cancer, second, that there is no viable screening programme for ovarian cancer, and third, that nearly 600 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Scotland each year, which all highlight the importance of early diagnosis in the saving of lives, as well as the propagation of the four main symptoms; understands that Target Ovarian Cancer has found that 45% of women in Scotland wrongly believe cervical screening will detect ovarian cancer, which is not the case, and considers that if any of the four symptoms such as bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or more frequent passing of urine are experienced over a prolonged time, then it essential that the GP is contacted.
