October Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that the month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness of the disease, including early detection, the signs and symptoms associated with breast cancer and to highlight the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of breast cancer; understands that breast cancer is the most common cancer in the United Kingdom, with around one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime; notes that whilst the disease mainly affects women, in rare cases men can also get breast cancer; commends the work of charities and healthcare professionals in highlighting the importance of screening and regular self-checks for any changes to the breast, as there is a good chance of recovery if the cancer is detected at an early stage, and believes that it is vital to see a GP if any of the following symptoms are noticed, a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts, discharge from either nipple, which may be streaked with blood, a lump or swelling in either of the armpits, dimpling on the skin of the breasts, a rash on or around the nipple or a change in the appearance of the nipple.
