Galloway Association of Glasgow Celebrates 230th Anniversary
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Galloway Association of Glasgow on its 230th Anniversary, which was celebrated with a dinner held at the Creebridge House Hotel in Minnigaff, Wigtownshire on 1 October 2022; notes that the association was formed in 1791 as the Glasgow Galloway Brotherly Society, a mutual society for the benefit of its members who had moved from Galloway to Glasgow; further notes that the society’s original purpose was to provide financial support for its members' families, left behind in Galloway, in the event of illness or death and that, in addition to this, the society also allowed those from Galloway to meet in Glasgow to participate in social activities; acknowledges that over time the society evolved into the Galloway Association of Glasgow, which is now a charitable trust that supports good causes within Galloway, such as the arts, education, non-commercial groups and individuals, and that, in addition to its charitable role, it continues to bring together those with a love for and interest in Galloway; thanks and commends the society for the support it provides to a range of activities within Galloway, and wishes it well for the future.
