Celebrating St Andrews Day
The motion
That the Parliament believes that St Andrew’s Day should be an opportunity for all the people of Scotland to celebrate their patron saint, cultural diversity and membership of the international community; considers that there should be wider recognition of a holiday, including a school holiday, on or around 30 November so that St Andrew’s Day becomes a day of national celebration; believes that people should be encouraged to follow what it sees as St Andrew’s example, with acts of kindness especially to less fortunate people, with the aim of creating a more caring, compassionate society; notes that St Andrew is also the patron saint of several other countries, including Ukraine and Russia; condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and calls for a peaceful and just solution to the ongoing conflict in that part of the world.
