Dunblane Congratulated as the First Dementia Friendly Town in the Stirling Area

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Dunblane has become the first DementiaFriendly town in the Stirling area; notes that Stirling Council Provost, DouglasDodds joined more than 100 people in the town’s Victoria Halls for thecelebration event on 22 October 2022, which, it understands, was theculmination of five years’ work by the Dementia Friendly Dunblane steeringgroup in the Alzheimer Society recognition process; understands that part ofthis process involves learning about dementia and becoming a dementia friend byundertaking the simple, practical actions that it believes can make a dramaticdifference to people living with dementia, as well as their family carers;believes that this process includes identifying small initial steps such as thecolour of doors, mats, toilet seats and clear directions on signs anddocuments; understands that the steering group has also set up a weekly memorycafé and meeting centre in Dunblane, where people can meet, have fun, talk toothers in a similar position and enjoy creative activities, as well as offeringan opportunity for family carers to receive practical and emotional support andhave a break; understands that individuals who have dementia and family carers,have experienced a wide range of benefits from attending these events; further understandsthat at the celebration event, members and family carers of Fife the dementiasupport group, which is known as Striving Towards A New Day (STAND), sharedpowerful, personal stories of young onset dementia, whilst certificates werealso presented to some of the many volunteers whose support, it believes, wascrucial in securing the achievement, and congratulates and commends everyoneinvolved on what it sees as this monumental achievement.
