World COPD Day 2022

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes World COPD Day, an awareness day that takes place on 16 November 2022; notes that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious lung condition affecting 140,000 people across Scotland and that it is the second most common lung disease in Scotland, after asthma, with around 2.5% of the population living with a COPD diagnosis; welcomes the publication of Asthma + Lung UK’s new report Delayed Diagnosis and Unequal Care: the reality for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the UK in 2022, which is based on a survey of the lived experiences of over 6,500 people with a COPD diagnosis, including 607 in Scotland; regrets that the findings of the survey show that a higher percentage of respondents (85.5%) in Scotland are not receiving the basic measures of COPD care, the five fundamentals, compared to the 2021 survey (82.8%) and that significant barriers and delays to diagnosis are resulting in people not getting a correct and timely diagnosis; recognises that the Respiratory Care Action Plan 2021-2026, published in 2021, seeks to address many of the challenges faced by people living with lung conditions, such as COPD and asthma; understands that Asthma + Lung UK Scotland is working with the Scottish Government and other key stakeholders to implement the recommendations of the plan, and congratulates Asthma + Lung UK Scotland for the work it does to raise the profile of lung health and give a voice to the one in five poeple living with a lung condition in Scotland.
