The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Jake Wightman has made the shortlist for Male Athlete of the Year in The Scottish Sports Awards; notes that the award recognises outstanding performance over the season by a male athlete who has exhibited dedication, determination, and excellence in their sport; understands that Jake has claimed a Commonwealth Games 1500m bronze, a European Championships silver over 800m, and broke a 33-year-old Scottish 800m record in September 2022; notes that Jake has also been nominated for Sports Moment of the Year for his run in Oregon, which named him World 1500m Champion, making him the second Scot to win a World Championship gold medal and the first British man to win the 1500m World title since 1983; commends the efforts of Jake’s coach and father, Geoff Wightman, who, it understands, has helped guide and push Jake towards his exceptional achievements; congratulates Jake on his nominations, which, it believes, have no doubt inspired young men in sport, and wishes him all the best in his future seasons.
