Statue of Billy McNeill Unveiled in Bellshill

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the unveiling of a bronze statue in Bellshill of respected football legend and Lisbon Lion, Billy McNeill, who grew up a mere 150 yards away from the statue in Abbotsford Place; notes that Billy’s wife, Liz, unveiled the statue, with the unveiling attended by a large crowd, including other family members and friends, as well as local people and football fans; understands that the statue was erected after a two-year fundraising campaign, with more than £80,000 raised by the Billy McNeill Commemoration Committee, which fundraises to support young sportspeople in Lanarkshire; acknowledges that Billy McNeill, who passed away in April 2019, aged 79, and was nicknamed Cesar by fans, spent his entire professional career playing with Celtic, making a record 832 appearances for the Parkhead club; further acknowledges that, as Celtic captain, Cesar was the first British player to lift the European Cup after Celtic’s triumph over Inter Milan in 1967, with Billy also winning nine league titles, seven Scottish Cups and six League Cups and, as Celtic manager, Billy led the club to four titles, and four cup wins, and commends the Billy McNeill Commemoration Committee for what it sees as its sheer determination and tireless work over the past three and a half years that culminated with the unveiling of the statue.
