Crohn’s and Colitis UK Early Diagnosis Campaign

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the launch of the Crohn’s and Colitis UK Early Diagnosis campaign, which, it understands, puts a focus on the importance of early diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease; understands that delays in diagnosis can impact hugely on quality of life, disrupts education and work, limits options for treatment and increases the risk of patients being hospitalised or needing emergency surgery; believes that reducing delays to diagnosis will improve the quality of life of patients, while reducing the wider costs to the NHS; understands that an important part of the campaign will seek to raise public awareness of lower gastrointestinal conditions and break down the stigma over bowel conditions to ensure that people do not delay in seeking help for these conditions; believes that this will address the current barriers to diagnosis in lower socioeconomic areas in Scotland; considers that creating a national primary care pathway for people presenting with lower gastrointestinal symptoms, will increase confidence around diagnosis, prioritise endoscopies by patient need, significantly reduce delays and ensure that patients are diagnosed quickly and on a treatment plan before requiring costly emergency care or surgery; understands that Scotland has the highest proportion of the population living with Crohn’s or colitis in the UK, estimated at over 50,000 people (one in 103), living with Crohn’s or colitis, and wishes the campaign every success in meeting its aims.
