Doddie Weir - A True Rugby Legend and Champion Fund-Raiser

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the indomitable spirit and bravery of George Wilson (Doddie) Weir, whose legacy, as a Scottish rugby legend as well as his incredible charity fund-raising work in the six years following his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis, it believes will live on forever; understands that his foundation, My Name’5 Doddie, has raised more than £8 million, and was honoured with the Helen Rollason Award for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity at the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony; recognises what it sees as his remarkable contribution to rugby with Stewart’s Melville and Melrose, where he won six Scottish championships, before turning out for Newcastle and Border Reivers; believes that Doddie gained his first Scotland cap against Argentina in 1990, and will long be remembered for scoring two tries against the All Blacks in a quarter-final loss at the 1995 Rugby World Cup; further believes that Doddie represented the British and Irish Lions during a distinguished career that earned him an MBE, while gaining iconic status with Scotland rugby fans, who gave him a rapturous ovation at Murrayfield in November 2022; considers that Doddie’s inspiration, courage and humour are unlikely to be witnessed again, and sends its heartfelt condolences to his wife Kathy, and their sons Hamish, Ben and Angus John Doddie.
