The Success of Young People in the AgriScot Business Skills Competition
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that Jack Young of Carluke has won the AgriScot Business Skills Competition as part of the Farm Business of the Year Awards 2022; understands that the awards recognise the high standards that farm businesses uphold and the example they set for the wider industry and that the business skills competition, which is open to ages 18 to 25, aims to assess general business skills and awareness of topical agricultural issues; notes that the competition consisted of three rounds, which were an initial application with CV and response to the statement, “The importance of Agri-business managers developing more resilient businesses”, a farm walk and interview, and a presentation on the evaluation of a new product being launched as part of the Product Innovation Award; recognises what it sees as a growing concern that an aging population in Scotland’s agricultural sector is a threat to this vital industry, and applauds Jack’s choice to study agriculture at SRUC Barony and Oatridge before returning home to work full time on the family farm; acknowledges what it sees as the challenges of the agri-business sector, including rising costs, staff recruitment struggles, food security concerns, supply chain demands, and changing practices and equipment for net-zero and nature; commends those who participated in the competition and the young people committed to advancing their skills to contribute positively to the rapidly evolving agricultural landscape in Scotland as leaders in rural and farming communities; congratulates Jack on his victory, and wishes him, as well as all the other participants, every success in the future.
