World Insulin Day Celebrates Professor John Macleod

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the new awareness day, 23 January, as World Insulin Day; believes that this was inspired by the legacy of renowned Aberdeen physiologist Professor John Macleod, an alumnus of Aberdeen Grammar School and Aberdeen University; recognises that the 23 January is the anniversary of the world’s first successful dose of clinically useful insulin for the treatment of type 1 diabetes; understands that Professor John Macleod led the University of Toronto team that discovered insulin and was jointly, along with his colleague, Frederick Banting, awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine; further understands that, on the 23 January 1922, the 14-year-old Leonard Thompson received the first dose of purified Toronto insulin, and that within hours his physical condition improved dramatically, which signalled the team’s success at discovering a long-sought and life-saving treatment for diabetes; considers that, sadly, prior to this discovery, those with what is now known as type 1 diabetes typically only survived for a matter of months from their diagnosis; celebrates what it considers this miracle treatment, which, it believes, has saved tens of millions of lives around the world, and welcomes the unveiling of a Professor John Macleod statue in Aberdeen, which is due to take place in Autumn 2023 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of his Nobel Prize.
