Remembering Mr Ali Ahmed Aslam, Founder of Glasgow’s Shish Mahal Restaurant
The motion
That the Parliament sends thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of Glasgow restaurateur, Mr Ali Ahmed Aslam, also known as "Super Ali", who passed away aged 79 on 19 December 2022; notes that Mr Ali first opened the Shish Mahal restaurant in 1964, following in the footsteps of his father, Noor Mohammed, who ran what many regard as Glasgow's first "proper" Indian restaurant, Green Gates; understands that Mr Ali is credited with inventing the recipe for Chicken Tikka Masala and helped popularise Indian cuisine in Scotland; notes that many warm tributes and happy memories have been shared by generations of customers who have enjoyed Mr Ali’s legendary dishes and hospitality over the years, and hopes that these will provide some comfort to his family at this sad time.
