Glasgow Man Launches Community Walks for Men's Mental Health
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Kieran McGregor, from Pollok, on launching the Sports Forever Foundation to tackle issues with men’s mental health after a friend’s suicide; understands that he hopes to change the way young people, particularly men, face mental health issues, making sure that nobody is going it alone; believes that the Sports Forever Foundation hopes to change what it considers the toxic culture, which has left many young men living in deprived areas across Glasgow with few options after leaving school; notes that Kieran has already gained the support of Greater Pollok Services and Pollok After School Care; believes that Kieran hopes to set up free clubs allowing young people to have access to sporting equipment without the hefty charges that can accompany private facilities; recognises that he has been working to gather funding, cut red tape and find help to turn those dreams into a reality; understands that in an effort to keep the minds of men in his neighbourhood away from negativity, he has set off to climb some of Scotland's highest peaks, visiting lochs and trekking through woods with a group of young men; further understands that the walks are designed to help forge a bond between the men, and create a safe space for them to open up, crushing the systemic silence that, it believes, Kieran blames for the worries the male sex often have about expressing their mental health concerns, and understands that there are plans for more walks and events across the country as he strives to raise the funds to open a permanent centre on what it sees as one of his area’s many underutilised plots of vacant space.
