Cancer Prevention Action Week 2023

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes Cancer Prevention Action Week 2023, which runs from 20 to 26 February and is organised by the World Cancer Research Fund; understands that, this year, the organisation is focusing on how people can cut back on processed meat, which is linked to bowel cancer; notes that Cancer Prevention Action Week is an annual event to raise awareness of cancer and cancer prevention, and encourage people to take action; understands that around 1,100 people are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK, but that 40% of all cancer cases could be prevented, and that making small, consistent changes to people's lives can help avoid preventable cancers; acknowledges that the World Cancer Research Fund is a UK-based cancer prevention charity that looks at how diet, weight and physical activity can affect the risk of developing and surviving cancer, while sharing this evidence with the public, health professionals and policymakers; understands that, in September 2022, the medical journal, The Lancet, stated that prevention is the best hope of reducing the global burden of cancer; considers this to be an endorsement of all that the World Cancer Research Fund is working to achieve, and commends the charity on its extensive work in this field.
