New Pioneering Recycling Facility for Fife

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that up to 60 jobs are to be created in Fife, as a result of the opening of a new pioneering recycling facility; understands that the facility, which is in the Whitehill Industrial Estate in Glenrothes, aims to develop a greater plastics recycling infrastructure in the UK in order to prevent the material being exported overseas; notes that the site is co-owned by Morrisons, with the involvement of other organisations, such as Nestle UK and Ireland and Zero Waste Scotland, and will be operated by the recycling plant specialists, Yes Recycling; understands that, at full capacity, the site will recycle 15,000 tonnes of plastic packaging per year, by taking low-grade plastics, including sweet wrappers, crisp packets, salad bags and non-PET food film, and turning the plastics into flakes and pellets that can be used to make new plastic products; further understands that other pellets will be compressed into "ecosheets", a strong and cost-effective alternative to plywood that can be recycled again at the end of its life; understands that the hard-to-recycle soft plastic will be sent to the 65,000 sq ft site from Morrisons distribution sites and stores, and by Cireco Scotland, which operates Fife Council’s household kerbside collection service, and congratulates all involved in the establishment of the plant, which it hopes will see a vast amount of plastic packaging diverted away from landfills in the future.
