100th Anniversary of Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH)

The motion

That the Parliament praises the work of the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH), Scotland's national mental health charity, on its 100th anniversary; understands that SAMH traces its roots back to 1923 and the pioneering work of Dr Kate Fraser CBE, a psychiatrist from Paisley, on improving the conditions and treatment of people with mental health problems, and that SAMH now aims to do this across all of Scotland’s communities; notes that the charity has since grown to employ around 550 staff and operate more than 70 services across Scotland, including Whins of Milton in Stirling, spanning employment, horticulture, supported accommodation, peer support and suicide prevention; notes that, in 2022, SAMH supported almost 25,000 people with their mental health and wellbeing; understands that SAMH is encouraging people across the country to join its centenary celebrations and to make 2023 the year to do something for Scotland’s mental health; notes that to encourage this, it has set up a centenary hub, which, it understands, includes suggestions from hosting get-togethers and participating in fundraisers to joining the campaign for better mental health and making time for people's wellbeing, and notes that it was launched at Paisley Abbey on 1 March 2023.
