The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the town of Kilmarnock for being named Town Champion in the Visa Let’s Celebrate Towns Awards from a short list of 30; understands that the awards, run by Visa in partnership with the British Retail Consortium, seek to be a nationwide showcase of celebrating the hundreds of towns across the UK, and that winners are selected by a panel of independent judges from across business, industry and regional bodies; further understands that each town shortlisted demonstrates how towns are adapting to new challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing environment, as well as actively encouraging the adoption of best practice across the nation; notes that the eight winners across the UK will receive up to £20,000 of direct investment into a local community project or initiative and receive a dedicated programme of support for local businesses; welcomes investment into town centres and the development of vibrant and economically-productive communities, particularly in rural areas; commends the work of the Kilmarnock and Cumnock Business Associations in partnership with East Ayrshire Council on their community investment initiatives such as the East Ayrshire Gift Card, the Digital High Street and the Shop Front Improvement Scheme; applauds everyone in the community who contributed to this achievement, and wishes Kilmarnock and other towns across South Scotland continued success.
