Emigration from the Hebrides to the New World: SS Metagama and Marloch Centenary

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the voyages of both SS Metagama and SS Marloch in April 1923 from the Western Isles to New Brunswick, Canada; understands that around 600 young Hebridean emigrants travelled on board vessels owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, which set sail from Stornoway, Lochboisdale and Castlebay in search of opportunities in the New World; recognises the long-term impact the loss of this demographic had on island communities following the losses experienced as a result of the First World War and the Iolaire disaster; congratulates those involved in the local authority-led Dìleab 2023 project, which, it understands, is staging a range of commemorative events over the months ahead involving schools, historical societies and the wider community; understands that events marking the centenary of the voyages will culminate in August 2023 in a tattoo led by the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band from Ontario, with descendants of those who travelled on the emigrant ships expected to make the homecoming journey; recognises the significance of this centenary for communities who continue their efforts to reverse local depopulation, and wishes success for all the upcoming events across the Western Isles marking the centenary of SS Metagama and SS Marloch’s voyages.
