April: The Month of the Military Child
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that April is the Month of the Military Child, a celebration of the important role that children play in the military community; understands that the aim of this is to highlight the challenges that military children face and overcome, to applaud their strengths and raise awareness of what their lives are like; believes that it is a time to celebrate and raise awareness of what it sees as the unique experiences children from an Armed Forces background may encounter; understands that the definition of a military or service child is a person whose parent, or primary carer, serves in the regular armed forces or as a reservist, or has done at any point during the first 25 years of that person’s life; further understands that, while this event originated in the USA, it has been gaining momentum in the UK during recent years, publicised and nurtured by organisations such as the Royal Air Force Families Federation, which, throughout April, will be sharing information and highlighting resources and initiatives to support children from an Armed Forces background, as well as Forces Children Scotland, the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, Little Troopers, Army Families Federation, the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines Charity and many more; believes that nearly 12,500 children and young people from serving, reservist or veteran families are currently in Scottish education and that this number is forecasted to increase in coming years, and commends everyone involved with the support, education and welfare of forces’ children and their families.
