Solway Stars Reach New Heights in ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championship

The motion

That the Parliament warmly congratulates the Solway Stars on becoming the first Scottish team in history to attend the International Skating Union (ISU) World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships, having been selected by British Ice Skating to represent Great Britain (GB) at the March 2023 event in Angers, France, where the Dumfries-based team achieved the 15th overall ranking out of 19 countries competing; understands that this is the highest ranking ever achieved by a GB team; further understands that the Solway Stars became the first Scottish team to win the British Championship title in 2022, and have now retained the title for the second consecutive year; notes that the team attended the Leon Lurje Challenge Cup in Gothenberg, Sweden, which earned them world ranking points; recognises that the team consists of 17 skaters, aged between 14 and 19, who take part in what it sees as this physically demanding sport that requires a high level of team-working skills, which are developed through what it considers a relentless commitment to training, moving as a flowing unit at high speed over the ice, while completing complicated footwork and other elements; notes that there are now 70 competitive teams covering all parts of the UK; praises the guidance and commitment of the Solway Stars' head coach, Philip Carter, and his dedicated team, in bringing success to the town, and wishes the team continued success in the coming year as they strive to reach greater achievements in the sport.
