The Role of Swimming Pools

The motion

That the Parliament considers that swimming pools play an important role in Scottish society; believes that they enable the teaching of what it sees as a valuable life skill, the ability to swim, to people of all ages, in particular children; understands that swimming has been proven to have physical and mental health benefits; believes that such health benefits can often act as preventative health measures, which can reduce the strain on the NHS; notes that swimming pools often also act as community hubs, which, it considers, can be vital social assets for villages, towns and cities; understands that in non-coastal constituencies, such as Coatbridge and Chryston, swimming pools may be the only facility available where people can learn how to swim; notes the view that it is of critical importance that funding is provided in order to keep swimming pools open across the country, and further notes the calls for the Scottish Government to provide continued support to ensure that everyone can swim.
